It’s been 5 years since Wande’s last project and now he has just released an EP to tickle the ears of his fans. To understand why it took so long for one of afropop’s biggest names to put out another project, all you need to do is look at the singles-driven market that exists within the Nigerian music scene. Clearly, Wande Coal is at the top of this game, however, he’s ready to give us another project to hold us over in the meantime.
The singer graciously themes this EP as “Realms” and it’s a well garnished delight lacking nothing in its composition. Nothing feels out of place and everything feels familiarly beautiful and even though we’re coming into times where afropop is fast becoming Africa’s global export, there deserves to be music made just for music’s sake. The 7-track EP houses previously released singles like the Sarz-produced Vex, Naughty Girl, Ode Lo Like, and the hit song, Again. The only featured act is Nigerian-American star Wale, who hops on the remix to Again.
“Realms” is a simulation and model-like representation of the singer’s craft over the years. Whatever the case may be, Wande’s ethereal touch on afropop would most definitely get you into realms. It is undeniable that Wande Coal has helped shape the sound of Contemporary Pop and Afropop in Nigeria, from his early days with Mo’Hits, to recent classics like “Iskaba” with DJ Tunez. The Black Diamond frontier is making a significant stamp and reaffirmation that his music stands and remains. Listen to “Realms” EP below:
