Known for being a key player in the production of Wizkid’s 2012 smash hit Beat of Life (Samba), Sarz is undeniably one of the unconventional producers dominating the industry. Over the years, he had produced for a series of artists, including Naeto C, Niniola and many more, and in 2019, he took his career a step further when he released his joint EP with Nigerian-American singer and songwriter, Wurld, titled I Love Girls with Trobul.
Fast forward to 2021, Sarz has made it his mission to dominate the airplay and the music charts with his music. Still riding on the success of his EP with Lojay, the superstar producer wasted no time in dropping his second joint project of the year. This time, he collaborated with London-based Nigerian artist Obongjayar on a four-track EP titled Sweetness.
In a press release, Obongjayar said “the EP looks at the early stages of a relationship, with ego stripped away-the vulnerability, doubt and anxiety of trying to figure out where you stand as well as the sweetness, and excitement“. Sarz added, “I have never created a project like this before. I would describe the EP as genre-bending-it fuses synthwave, ’80’s music, Afrobeats and pop. Different elements were blended to create sweetness”
The first track, titled Sweetness, introduces the musical blueprint of the entire project. Obongjayar’s vocals on this song may enthral listeners, though it is Sarz’s unique production capabilities that are the focus of the track.
Gone Girl is the perfect blend of Afrobeats and RnB. It is no secret that Obongjayar’s vocals can soothe the harshest seas, and the effect it has on this track makes it easy for listeners to get lost in it. When listening closely, the synthwave subtly infused can be heard under the sound of the drums. While Gone Girl has a more upbeat sound, it cannot be described as overwhelming, as listeners could relax to it or softly dance if they wish.
Unlike the previous two tracks, the third track, If You Say, has a slightly different musical style. Although it did not veer off Afro-Fusion, the genre of this track differs from the rest. It has a blend of different music genres, from electro-funk to Afrobeats, reminding listeners of EDM from the past decades.
The final track on the EP, titled Nobody, is more Afrobeats than the others. Compared to the others, this track is more fast-paced, with more percussion instruments than the others. The ease in which Obongjayar delivers his verses proves just how perfect this partnership is.
With each project he releases, Sarz showcases the different sides to him. As a producer, he chooses to experiment with the different sounds from around the globe while subtly reminding everyone that he truly is not anyone’s mate.
