Erockfor (or Rocky) is a Cameroonian-Canadian singer-songwriter, based in Seoul the capital city of South Korea moving between genres effortlessly.
These exciting artiste isn’t sticking to one genre, a popular style among emerging artistes. For decades it has been hard to classify new music, artists mixing different styles which makes it impossible to classify them.
Erockfor first introduced herself with “How Will I Know,” a song which blends jazz, hip-hop and soul in December 2019, the singer is also gearing up for the release of her latest number “Questions”.
We chat with Erockfor ahead of her January 30th offering “Questions”.
Tell us a little bit about who you are and “How Will I Know” your debut single?
I’m a Cameroonian jazz/soul singer based in Seoul, South Korea, and I was born in Montreal, Canada. I grew up listening to West African and Caribbean music along with hip hop and whatever was on the radio. So, I love experimenting with different genres. I also act and do burlesque on occasion.
I wrote “How Will I Know” since experts say we’re in a dating apocalypse, and I’ve witnessed a lot of people stay in relationships far past their expiration date. I’ve done the same. I knew I had to write a song about how to know when someone is for you and when they should get the boot. “How Will I Know” is my first single. So it’s my baby. I’m happy to see that so many people are rocking with it.
What was it like growing up in Montreal, Canada?
I love Montreal. Our summers are full of so many activities and festivals. Our winters are brutal, though. I grew up around a lot of people from different backgrounds. So, I got to eat lots of good food. I also speak French. That’s always a hit when I bust it out during shows.
Why did you move to South Korea?
Before moving to South Korea, I had a translation business. Two years in, my business started to slow down, and I had to look for another source of income. I decided to look into teaching abroad. After watching a bunch of YouTube videos, I decided on Seoul, South Korea.
What was the experience like?
I love it here. The food is good (can you tell I’m a foodienne?), I’ve met some really kind people, and I’ve had amazing opportunities to perform here.
How has the experience influenced your music?
I really got into jazz when I moved to Korea. I’ve always been a fan. But, when I moved here the third time (I’ve been living here on and off for almost six years), I started studying jazz singers, because I began moonlighting as one.
Popdust premiered your debut single “How Will I Know” — what was getting your music in front of them like?
Popdust is a big platform, so I was really excited that they premiered my music video. A lot of hard work went into it. It was directed my Eunice Lee, a talented Korean American videographer here. And the video features some of my artsy friends. It was a true collaborative effort, and I’m happy with how it all turned out.
What inspires you?
The extraordinary inspires me. I know I have a gift. Let’s see how far it can take me! A year from now, my life will be very different—for the better. Erockfor is my middle name, and I’m named after my great-grandma. It’s a great honor for me to create using her name. She was a magical woman. I intend on channeling that magic.
Erockfor’s latest single “Questions” drops Friday, January 30.
