In today’s world the modern day woman isn’t soft-spoken or timid like her counterpart of yester-years. She is a force to be reckoned with, but that isn’t the case with the women from Haryana, a Northern Indian state. The state is known for it abysmal sex and patriarchy, but this rising pop star defied all odds, from her extended family disapproval to spending more time doing what she loves and against this same odds, she made it out as a rapper in a male dominated space.
On this session, Agsy tells us about how she started making music, her new single, what inspired the lyrics, how she discovers new music, her advice to other indie’s and what’s next. She sounded rebellious, she’s speaking for the Indian females (mostly Haryana), her response on this session reflects her persona.
Tell us how you first started making music?
I’ve been writing pop songs since I was 14 years of age. It all began with an innocent dream of becoming a Rockstar. I used to watch Hannah Montana with her dual personality and I immediately knew that this was the life I wanted for myself. I started releasing my own songs in the genre “hip-hop” professionally in 2016 with my debut single “Wasted Love” and the nation accepted me with love and I never really stopped after that , it’s been a ride.
What is the inspiration behind your new single ‘AURAT’?
Aurat is a song about my personal experience, how its like for a girl to grow up in India because of the orthodox mindset of her family and society. The hook line says “Waqt Ab Aurat Uthaneka” which basically means – it’s time to uplift women now.
Tell us the story behind the lyrics in your latest single ‘AURAT’?
This is the first Hindi rap that I gave birth to and I remember shedding tears when I wrote this. I was in my office cab just thinking about my life, my childhood where my whole family saw me differently and with suspicion for being open-minded but more because I was an open-minded girl. I was born in a joint family where I was the first girl child in 3 generations, so they took all the provisions to keep me “safe”.
That means no school trips ever, no social media, supervised internet, no boys whatsoever, curfews at 7 pm to come home whereas that wasn’t the case for my brothers. I took all that anger, the frustration, the thought that I’m not alone and this is the story of every female in the country may be worse and wrote AURAT, my beautiful baby who has met 19 Million people already. Thank you !
How do you discover new music, let us know artists you listen to?
I keep exploring new artists every day, either through Spotify or YouTube no matter the genre or language because music has none. right? Some of the artists I regularly listen to are Dounia, Nicki Minaj, Rilès, Frank Sinatra, Raja Kumari, Billie Eilish, Mickey Singh, Billy Joel, there are so many more.
What advice will you give women like you building their independent music career?
People will try to put you down and things will be hard but know that they are afraid of your independence and they haven’t seen anyone like you. So never stop following your dreams and do what speaks to you without losing your ethics.
