South African based Nigerian rapper, songwriter and record producer McKay kicked off New Music Friday with the release of his newest project, a five-track EP titled You Know The Drill. Signed to Stomp Media Entertainment, Akorede Taiwo is a fast-growing artist whose prowess in the booth has gained the attention of the music industry. He began his career in 2015 with the release of his EP Kings and Knights, which garnered up to 50,000 streams, impressive for a new industry player. Since then, he hasn’t slowed down. He has collaborated with his various peers, and his last project Trappist 2 amassed over 2 million streams on Spotify, making him the second most-streamed Spotify artist in South Africa in 2018. By 2021, McKay has released a total of three body of works; one album and two EPs and has been able to gain a loyal but steadily growing fanbase.
In the summer of 2020, McKay announced that his new EP was currently in the works, but no release date was given. On the 23rd of April in the following year, the anticipated project dropped.
You Know The Drill is an explicit Hip-Hop EP with four solo tracks and one with a feature from Hip-Hop artist Dam4star and Good Times Ahead.
All five tracks can be classified as Drill music; a fast-rising sub-genre of Hip-Hop popularized by the UK Hip-Hop community. They each have their underlying messages, and these messages are heard when listened to closely. In Georgina, McKay talks about his attraction to a woman and how he appreciates her, comparing their connection to football legend Cristiano Ronaldo and his longtime partner Georgina Rodriguez. In Au Revoir, McKay seems to be dissing an unnamed foe, talking about their incompetence and how different they both are.
Hip-Hop fans would appreciate the familiarity this project gives and the ease in which McKay flows into the beats proves just how comfortable he is in the booth.
You Know The Drill is available on all streaming platforms.
