Some of us know Katasha J (born Katasha James), and majority of us might not know her, but meet the Canadian RnB singer who’s gearing up to the release of her upcoming debut album which is coming after Lullaby EP. — On this exclusive interview, the rnb crooner tells us about her story, why she started making music, Delicate Dollhouse, the title of her upcoming album and so much we need to know about her and the album.
Tell us about yourself Katasha and why you started making music… I have been singing since I was 5 years old. My mother and her sister’s used to sing so I was always surrounded by music in my household. Music is who I am and I truly enjoy making it for the world to enjoy. I am also a classically trained piano player, so most of my songs I play the melody and then my producer will build the beat around it.
What inspired ‘Delicate Dollhouse’? Your upcoming Album This project , Delicate Dollhouse, started in September after I released my first EP, Lullaby on spotify and apple music. I had most of the songs written from years ago and just planned out the list of songs and worked on finishing them up and recording them. There are 9 songs on this project. 6 of the songs are produced by Nate Smith and 3 are by Mastah Bruce. I also have features from Lexxicon and Markus Aurelyus etc. A lot of the songs on this project are very personal. Ranging from songs about my father , a horrible breakup and my aunt’s passing.
What advice do you have for other independent artists starting out in their career? Sometimes being an independent artist can discourage you, so one thing you need to have is patience . When I first started making music in the studio I hadn’t found the right producer to work with and I was often frustrated with the end result of the songs I was recording. A lot of the producers I often worked with weren’t serious about their craft. I met my current producer Nate Smith in 2018 and I’ve stuck with him since.
What do you wish you knew when you first started making music? I wasn’t very confident when I first started writing and recording my own music. So I wish I wasn’t so hard on myself in the beginning. At this point in my life and musical career I am confident within my craft and I’m going to continue to grow and learn.
Katasha, what are you working on right now? Delicate Dollhouse will be out this weekend and then I will be working on my friend Martian’s upcoming project . Helping make the melodies for beats and vocals. I’m very excited for what 2020 has in store for me.
