If there’s one thing to note for sure it’s that 2022 is fast becoming the year Ghana music industry is experiencing a never before seen boom. From the Forever–crooner Gyakie taking over the radio to newcomer Black Sheriff staying atop charts in Nigeria. But there’s one artist to watch that is breaking into the scene with her remarkable sound: Titi Owusu. Harmoniously flitting between genres, the singer claims to be genre-less, but she’s more of a genre juggler. “I do not believe I have limitations, I sing every genre and I rap too so it’s pretty hard to classify it,” she said.
Speaking on her most recent release, the singer revealed, “Love is, not just the good part of it but also the ugly, very often when people talk about love they only talk about the happy times but what happens if there are challenges?.”
We caught up with the singer who spends most of her time performing live music, she talks to us about her career path, ever-changing sound, and what we can expect this year.
Hey Titi Owusu! How have you been?
I’ve been great, busier than I’ve ever been but I like it.
Accra is fast becoming a huge music scene, what is it like living in such a musical city?
Living in Accra is pretty great, it’s convenient especially because I’m very active in the music scene (live music).
There’re so many talented people in this city not just musicians but artists in general and it’s so inspiring.
Why did you choose music as a career path? What has been your biggest challenge?
I wouldn’t say I chose music, MUSIC CHOSE ME. Before I could even speak it was already written that I’d be doing this, it’s all I’ve known since I was a little girl and I’ll probably still be doing this when I’m an old woman lol.
What’s the message/inspiration behind “Pray for Me” featuring Moelogo?
Love is, not just the good part of it but also the ugly, very often when people talk about love they only talk about the happy times but what happens if there are challenges? The lyrics read “if you say you love me, pray for me, cus if it gets ugly I’ll pray for you, would you give it all up sake of me if I lose everything sake of you?”
Pray for me is just that need for a reaffirmation song and I have such an emotional connection to it.
How would you describe your sound?
I know most people know me as an Afro-pop artiste but I am so much more than that, I do not believe I have limitations, I sing every genre and I rap too so it’s pretty hard to classify it, I’m just gonna leave it at; I make great music.
Where do you pull your inspiration from?
I get inspired by the life I’ve envisioned for myself, I do not come from a rich background but I’ve always known that there is something better out there for me, every time I think about the life I want for myself, my family and my friends it makes me work even harder. I also get inspiration from the people who support me and my music, People dm me to pray for me amongst others and it just keeps me going
What can we expect from you this year?
Definitely more music, I was recently invited to a writers camp “Nxgencamp” and a lot of beautiful music was created in a matter of days and I can’t wait for people to hear them, I got to discover another version of me I wasn’t so sure existed so this is going to be a great year for me musically. More music is coming!
