Nigeria is, without doubt, doing tremendously well in its entertainment industry producing popular music talents who are gaining recognition both locally and internationally
One of the fast-growing talents in the industry is Major AJ, who has made a name for himself as a talented singer, rapper, and songwriter. His music blends elements of Afrobeat, Afro-pop, fusion, house, Amapiano, and alternative sounds, creating a unique style that he calls his own Afro-fusion.
The Chocolate City’s new act whose real name is Ajogwu Boluwatife Vincent grew up following his mother and grandmother to rehearsals in church and from there his love for music was birthed.
According to the Benue State-born and graduate of Computer Science from the University of Ilorin, his true love was always music and he refined his craft by headlining various shows in school ranging from Dremo Campus Tour, Trybe Ark Fest, Ilorin Walk on Water Fashion Show, and lots more. He won Unilorin Hype Next Rated and Artist of the Year, Kwara Outstanding Youths Award, and Best Rap Artist, and he was part of Hennessy VS Class Lagos Finalist 2018 just to mention a few.
Major AJ dropped his first official single, ‘Terminator‘ in February 2020, which opened up more recording opportunities for him and he followed that up with ‘Original Love‘ in April. In 2021, he released a single called ‘SALO‘ that caught the attention of his record label.
In this interview, Major AJ takes us on his music sojourn, background, how he bagged the Chocolate City record deal and other plans he is currently working on.
My name is Boluwatife Ajogwu popularly known as Major AJ, I’m from Benue State, Nigeria and I’m an Afro-fusion singer, rapper, and songwriter.
Every artist creating good music inspires me but to mention a few Burna Boy, Wizkid, Travis Scott, Asap Rocky, Buju BNXN.
My reality and my environment inspire me every day because I’m basically using my music to tell my story.
Asides from the fact that it’s what I love doing the most, another reason I love to create music is to connect with the people out there that I know may be in my exact situation and need music to help them through whatever they going through.
I want to make people not feel alone anymore, I want people to connect with my song and know if I can do it they can too.
‘My Own’ is a pretty much direct song that was inspired by a real-life experience I had trying to find true love in Lagos.
Since moving to Lagos after University in 2020, I had been single until last year when I met someone. I thought I finally found the one until she broke my heart and let me down because I was going through rainy days.
BlaqBonez is a big inspiration to me, asides from him being my label mate, I admire his creativity, talent, and ability to market and push himself. So it was not so hard to get him, I played him the song at a video shoot location and he liked it, the rest is history.
Well, the official video isn’t even out, that is the performance video and I had so much fun making it, when it comes to my craft I’m very involved in everything and I love to always input my creativity and ideas
Right now, I’d say expect more fantastic music and unique collaborations. Of course, a project is cooking but I won’t give a specific time, I’d serve y’all once it’s ready, but for sure fantastic stuff coming from me so y’all be on the lookout for MAJOR AJ.
