Listening to the right music in any movie can amplify one’s mood or add context. While many might not be familiar with synchronization (or sync placement), it’s the matching of multimedia and song, and over the years it has helped many artists globally create additional revenue streams.
The Groove Nexus 2022 ‘most popular‘ sync composer, Chris Level is one artist to watch from Rwanda whose career sync has had a direct effect on. “All the time. I write my soundtracks and music with sync licensing in my head but for losing my cool it was more of an afterthought,” he explains.

Hi Chris Level! How have you been?
Very good, just preparing myself for a big project I have soon.
You are from Rwanda? Tell us how Rwanda has impacted your art?
Yeah, Rwanda is a peaceful country with a lot of talented people like Kush Beatz. It didn’t impact my career choices but was a good place to be a musician.
Was that the first time your music started gaining traction?
When my friends started using it in their short videos and being viewed by thousands of people it was a great feeling.
How did you feel when you first heard your song on a video?
It was great yeah, it’s the same moment I realized that it was my calling cause I grew up wanting to be an actor early on but found myself in music.
Do you have any favorite placements yet?
Not yet. But I have a project that I’ll work on this august which will be my favorite because it’s the first global project im working on.
Do you ever write with sync in mind, or is it more of an afterthought?
All the time. I write my soundtracks and music with sync licensing in my head but for losing my cool it was more of an afterthought.
What countries do you have sync placements in?
Now it’s more in India and Asia and a few in Africa, but I’m planning to start to get more projects from the us, France, et.c
If you could pick one country to start getting sync placements, where would it be?
Hahahaha. I would pick Nigeria cause I love their traditional way of doing things and music.
Is there anything else you want to say about sync or advice for artists trying to get into sync?
Ok, just keep moving on because sync licensing is a long music journey that you have to keep doing no matter any outside factor… And keep enjoying the journey cause it will definitely hurt you in the beginning but you will quickly realize how crucial it was to keep moving.
