We link up with AQT, a Nigerian artiste born in Brooklyn and raised in Houston, who fuses traditional African rhythms with contemporary music to create a unique soundscape. His latest release, “Journey,” features his long-time partner KSA and delves into themes of self-discovery and spiritual awakening. Formally known as Abdul Quam Tadese, and now as AQT the genre-blending singer boasts of an MBA in Project Management and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management. Initially one-half of the music duo GALAKTiQ, he has collaborated with Nigerian stars like Olamide and LAX. Following the success of their single “Lagos Nights”, AQT decided to embark on a solo career with ‘Journey,’ while still maintaining his partnership with GALAKTiQ.
We caught up with AQT to delve into his musical origins, inspirations, and the creative process behind “Journey.” We also discussed what the future holds for this dynamic and talented artist.
Ultimately, for everything, the journey itself is a beautiful gift. Each of us has our unique path, and I am grateful to share my story with both new friends and those who have known me from the beginning. I hope my music reflects the diverse influences that have shaped me and inspire others to share their stories in their special way.
Growing up, my musical influences were remarkably diverse. I was exposed to traditional Nigerian rhythms from artists like Was Kwan 1 and Surf Platonic, as well as pop music from groups like SYNC and the Backstreet Boys through MTV TEL. Living in Alien Houston, Texas, I was immersed in basketball culture and hip hop/R&B music, which significantly shaped my sound. Furthermore, my Arabic background, including reciting Koranic verses and familiarity with Arabic melodies, has played a crucial role in shaping my music. By blending all of these elements, I find it instinctive to navigate and integrate these varied musical influences into my sound.
There’s beauty in the process so I don’t have a favorite moment but I’m enjoying the act of growth and manifestation and getting closer to my destination.
All aspects of my life, whether significant or trivial, originate in the spiritual realm – it serves as my compass for every endeavor. Music for me, is a direct expression of the soul, a means to imbue listeners worldwide with the same emotions that drive me, creating a contagiously captivating sound in the process.
In tracing my musical journey, one will quickly discover that my core principle is crossover appeal—this has been my mission from the very beginning. It’s what inspired the formation of my group, Galactic. My primary aim is to fully embody the best version of myself, showcasing a diverse range of sounds that define me at the highest level. Whether it’s American pop, Afro-fusion, house, EDM, dance, alternative, or any other genre, I aspire to craft a sound that knows no limits or boundaries.
My ultimate goal is to leave a lasting musical impression and succeed in my business ventures. Creating hit records and establishing a platform to uplift others defines success in my eyes. Upholding a legacy drives me forward. In the short term, I am excited to release more singles that are ready and share them with the world.
