Bloody Civilian’s debut EP is characterized by its frankness and directness. It is conceptualized as a therapeutic therapy session with no boundaries. The Nigerian producer and singer-songwriter, formerly known as Emosé on her Soundcloud, began her career recording video tutorials on making beats. Subsequently, she gained a cult-like following and established a connection with the creative community in Nigeria’s alté scene.
On this deluxe EP, her first major label release is signed to 0207 Def Jam, a UK arm of Def Jam recordings, all 6 track remixes of independently released “Anger Management” feature an all-star collective from the alté scene. The opener “Escapism” sets the tone of the project with an airy Amapiano log drums while being very candid about her socio-economic condition “My country give me nothing and the economy is falling” echoes the sentiments of youth from where she comes from. The track urges escapism from problems and limitations as the title goes and lends a guest feature Fave and Tay Iwar.
In the emotional reply to all nosy, overly dramatic Nigerian aunties the sultry Afropop track “Family Meeting” sets the record straight in what is a schooling of the ‘Aunties’ similar to what DETO BLACK would. “Auntie no want to go house, Auntie, please go home, even God rest on the seventh day,” she chants in the opening bridge. Just when we thought we’d heard it all bars from Joeboy, ENNY, and Majeed complement the song even more. It is a track made from “The Problem Child’s” Heaven if there’s any. In short, she wants people out of her business, warding off all intruders.
Bloody Civilian’s lead single “Mad Apology” is an upbeat track that evokes a real-life experience. The unapologetic declaration of an ex-lover in the track “Put That ShIt To Rest” feels authentic to the album, while the addition of a guest appearance by breakout rapper Odumodublvck adds an extra layer of depth to the club-ready track. The same flow is also evident in the song “How to Kill A Man,” which showcases a highly articulate lyricism while creating a captivating Afropop tune.
This EP feels like a rookie’s debut, and if there’s anything it proves, it’s that 2023 is Bloody Civilian’s year.
