Now, as we’re in the thick of quarantine, and the entire
world is at home, we expect to see even more dance-challenges and A-Star has
released his new EP which could potentially serve as daunting sound-tracks.
Kupe Propounder, A-Star has just recently gifted the world
with the release of his so to say album titled, ‘Do It For Dad’. The sudden
project is filled with three tracks with no special appearance.
A-Star already proved to be an expert at mining danceable
hits, and his music can turn anywhere with speakers into a club. Over the
3-tracks on ‘Do It For Dad’, he applied his knack for laying groovy Afropop and
nu-disco beats with blocky vocal phrasings.
The opening track, “Don’t Fear” is a timely bop with
reassuring lyrics that promise “We Go Be Okay/Everybody Spread Love, No
Fear/Family And Friend, Everybody Near”. The positive message of the song helps
create the uplifting mood of partying, and is especially needed in these
“City Bum Bum” returns the focus to harsh realities as he
sings lyrics that describe the violence on the streets; “They Dey Kill Our Bum/
We Be Feeling Numb Numb/ We Dey Keep A Gun Gun/ In This City Bum”. However, the
beat keeps a rhythmic pulse with the funky danceability of the horn harmonies
of the afrobeat instrumentals.
A-Star wraps up the EP with a flex song, “Pree Me Dance”, where his hip-hop influences are on display, as he brags about his recent accomplishments since breaking into the mainstream in 2018; “Man Doing Shows Up In China”. A-Star’s music is made to make you feel good, and it definitely succeeds. The short EP houses songs that are ripe for TikTok challenges and we would love to see it.
